Why am I Downcast and Disturbed?

July 11, 2012 — Leave a comment

Looking back on the past few years, I have gone through some rough times in my life. In the Bible, I have found wonderful strength and encouragement, truth and hope, purpose and meaning, learning and usefulness, in the troubles.  I was recently reading some of the passages in God’s Word and realized some of them, from in various places in the Bible, kind of read well one right after another; sort of like one sentence.  So, I thought I would actually write out the sentences, using those passages.  Below is the result.  I enjoyed it so much, I may do this for several other topics as well. Hopefully it is as much encouragement for you to read, as it was for me to compile.  Let me know your thoughts!  Feel free to print it and study the footnote references yourself.

Why Is My Soul Downcast?

Why is my soul downcast and disturbed within me?[1] It’s because my life is full of troubles[2], but I should be of good cheer, and cast all my cares and burdens on Jesus, because He said my life would have troubles, and He has overcome this world,[3] and He cares for me,[4] then I won’t worry about anything, but instead, I will give my troubles and fears to God through my prayers and requests, and include thankfulness for what He has given me. Then God’s peace, which is beyond anything I can imagine, will guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus[5] because the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective,[6] and I know that He hears my prayers and will deliver me out of my troubles.[7] I will also remember how He has been faithful to me in the past and those memories will strengthen me, because I delight in Him, and He will answer my prayers.[8]

The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed and the fearful, and a refuge in times of trouble,[9] and I feel scared and have troubles, but I realized that God didn’t give me a spirit of fear or timidity, but of power, love, and self control.[10] That tells me being fearful is a sin, so I will strengthen my mind, I will keep a clear head, and I will rest my hope fully on the grace of God[11], which He gives to me when I am humble,[12] and He will exalt me in due time[13] because I have learned to trust Him with all my heart, and not my own understanding of things,[14] to trust Him and not be afraid,[15] and to be content in whatever circumstances I am in,[16] because God is in charge.[17]

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties,[18] if I there is any offensive ways in me, I want to repent[19] so I can walk worthy of you, my Lord, I want to be fully pleasing to You, and fruitful in every good work, and to increase my knowledge of You.[20] Please lift me out of the miry pit it feels like I am in, and set my feet on solid ground.[21] Please hear my prayers Lord, don’t be silent at my tears,[22] don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, and please let your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.[23] Please give me peace as my mind focuses on you and your Word, and know that I do trust you.[24]

Therefore, because of His unfailing love for me[25], and His daily mercy and grace,[26] which He will abound toward me,[27] and is sufficient for me,[28] I will be strong and of good courage,[29] even though I may be weak, His strength will be made perfect in my weakness,[30] so He gets the glory, not me, and I will then be joyous in the Lord,[31] and He will also strengthen my heart, because my hope is in the Lord,[32] and I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,[33] and I can count on Him to direct my paths[34] and order my steps,[35] and to supply all my needs.[36] I know that all things work together for good because I love God, and I know He has called me for His purpose.[37]  Even the various trials and troubles I am going through are for a purpose, mostly for the testing of my faith to see if it is genuine[38] which pleases God,[39] and to produce patience,[40] and also to make me more like Jesus,[41] whom I love, serve, and want to be like. When my focus is on Jesus, it is not so much on my own desires[42], nor on my emotions,[43] so I can better pursue seeking first His kingdom.[44]

Question: How does the Bible help you when you are down?
